Heel Gussets:
With an empty needle, k across the 12 heel sts. Onto this same needle, pick up and k 12 sts up rt side of heel flap. With an empty needle (or needles) work across instep sts, keeping in pattern as est (established ) You will be on row 1 of lace pattern). With another empty needle, pick up and k 12 sts down left side of heel flap and work 6 sts from the heel. This place is the beginning of all future rounds. Continue on these sts, maintaining lace pattern on top of foot, until foot measures 2" less than desired finished length. End having worked rd 4 of lace pattern. On this last rd, dec 1 st by k2 tog the first 2 sts after the first marker on the instep. You will have 24 instep sts and 12 sts on each of the back needles = 48 sts.
